The 10 in ’10 Teen Chick Lit Challenge Check-In!

Can you believe it’s the end of July already? Where did this month go??? It’s time to post our progress on our 10 in ’10 Teen Chick Lit Challenge reading lists.

I so happy to finally have gotten some reading in this month despite being on deadline for CINDY ON A MISSION. Kiersten White’s fabulous PARANORMALCY is a Must. Read. If you’re a fan of Rachel Hawkins’ HEX HALL (i.e. if you love The Funny and The Paranormal), then PARANORMALCY should definitely be on your radar. It recently got bumped up by a month on the release schedule, so look for it at your local bookstore on August 31st!

Okay, your turn. :-) What have you been reading in the YA chick lit realm?

I had a bunch of ARCs hit my desk in March – all of which were dark paranormals – so I didn’t read any of my chick lit books. With the debut of The Cinderella Society officially behind me, I’m looking forward to catching up on chick lit reads in May!

See you in chat tonight at 8pm EST!

10 in ’10 Teen Chick Lit Challenge guest author… Julia DeVillers!

This month in the 10 in ’10 Teen Chick Lit Challenge, Jessica and I are delighted to bring you the fabulous Julia DeVillers as our guest author! Julia will be joining us tomorrow night at 8pm EST. I’ll be posting the link to the chat tomorrow, so stay tuned!

The Author

Name:

Julia DeVillers

Web Site:

web.mac.com/juliagirlwise

Short Bio:

Julia DeVillers is the author of books for kids, tweens and teens. Her book, How My Private Personal Journal became the Disney Channel Original Movie, Read it and Weep. Julia appears in a cameo as “Grossed-out customer being served pizza with real chicken feet sticking out of it.”

Her books have been featured in the New York Times, USA Today and all the major teen magazines. She lives in Columbus, Ohio and is about to live abroad for a year in Tbilisi, Georgia. She grew up in Albany, NY where many of her books are set.

The Book

Lynn Visible
March 4, 2010
Dutton

Lynn Vincent knows all the latest trends and isn’t afraid to flaunt her funky style. The problem is, in small-town Pennsylvania, being fashion forward makes Lynn socially backward. And the queen bees at her high school won’t let her forget it, especially when her dream of making the IT panel for GlITter Girl—the coolest fashion magazine in teendom—is crushed. But when one of Lynn’s unique creations makes it into the hands of a famous designer and onto the runway, it seems that Lynn might finally get her moment in the spotlight.

The Teen Chick Lit Interview

1.   As an author, what appeals to you about the teen chick lit genre? Why do you love to write it?

Teen chick lit is a genre that gifts us with books we can relate to, live vicariously through–or be glad that the things that happen to the main characters don’t happen to us!

The books can be entertaining, fun, and funny- but also can be smart and enlightening. And empowering. I love to write it because it seems to be a natural fit with my voice and style as a writer. When I first started writing fiction I sat down and that’s immediately what came out naturally: my first novel HOW MY PRIVATE PERSONAL JOURNAL BECAME A BESTSELLER. I also enjoy connecting with teen and tween writers and keeping up with what’s happening with them. I’m lucky this is my job!

2.   Do you love to read teen chick lit as much as you love to write it?

One reason I love to write chick lit is because I love to read it! I read them voraciously. When I read them, I feel like I’m hanging out with friends.

3.   What were some of the early teen chick lit books you remember reading?

Well, Meg Cabot’s Princess Diaries started my personal revolution as well as kicking off the recent success of the genre (Thanks, Meg!). SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELING PANTS, anything E Lockhart. Ooh, and my all-time favorite series by Megan McCafferty was an early love. And of course back in the day- Judy Blume. Stop me now.

Thanks for sharing the teen chick lit love, Julia! See you all in chat tomorrow night at 8pm EST. Check back tomorrow for the official chat link!

The 10 in ’10 Teen Chick Lit Challenge – March Update!

It feels like forever since I last blogged, but I am delighted to say “Ta da!” My new web site is finished and launched (woohoo!) and I’m back in BlogLand for more adventures. It’s about time, I say! :-)

First up is a lo-o-ong overdue bit of fun:

It’s March! And that means (despite the fact that it’s already March 10th – gah), it’s time to check in with your 10 in ’10 Teen Chick Lit Challenge reads!

In February, I read The Season by Sarah MacLean. Holy wow, this book ROCKS! I’m not usually a historical reader, so I wasn’t expecting to be so completely swept away by the setting and the characters and the world of regency England. I absolutely loved Alex, the heroine, and her feisty buddies Ella and Vivi. Smart, funny characters all around and a hunk who is totally yum-worthy. Score!

Next up for me is finishing Broadway Lights (which I had to set aside for a moment because some Tenner ARC tour books arrived needing immediate attention) and then… hmm… it might be a case of eenie meenie miney moe to decide which fabulous book to read next! :-)

And now the big question… what did you read in February for the 10 in ’10 Teen Chick Lit Challenge? Comment below or link your blog post about it via Mister Linky.

And stay tuned next week for a special 10 in ’10 feature on our March guest author Julia DeVillers and a chat with her on Tuesday, March 16th at 8pm EST! (A link to the chat will be posted here that afternoon – see you on Chatzy!)

10 in ’10 Teen Chick Lit Challenge – What I read in Jan!

10 in 10 Chick Lit Challenge

Yay!  It’s our very first 10 in ’10 Teen Chick Lit Challenge check-in day!

The lovely Jessica has posted the first official check-in over on her Chick Lit Teens blog, and I’m super excited to see what everyone has been reading and what they thought of it.  Remember to link your blog check-in post via Mr. Linky!

After seeing everyone’s fabulous lists for the challenge, my own challenge list grew quite a bit.  So instead of reading 10 teen chick lit books, I think my list is nearing 30 now!  To keep track of them, I’ve added a GoodReads widget in my sidebar listing them all.

In order to stay on track, I need to read 2-3 teen chick lit books from my list each month.  Since I adore teen chick lit (which is why I write it, I suppose), this should be easy peasy.

For the month of January, I read 2 awesome books from my list.

The Naughty List
by Suzanne Young

Mac and cheese!  This book is hilarious!  Suz is one of those rare writers who can mix great characterization with hilarious dialogue.  And her use of food as exclamations is so up my alley.  ;-)   Since this is Suz’s debut book, it also counts for my Debut Author Challenge via The Story Siren.  Double the fun, I say!

Wings
by Aprilynne Pike

I know, I know… I’m about a million years behind on my reading and just now pulled this from my TBR shelves.  I’ve been meaning to read it forever and boy, was it worth the wait!  I don’t read a ton of paranormals because I’m not a huge fan of vamps and weres, but I love cool new takes on mythology.  Aprilynne’s brilliant fae world is AWESOME.  I’m firmly Team Tamani (and secretly hope David ends up with a certain someone in future books), but no matter which direction books 2-4 go, I am going to eat them up.

So that’s my first 10 in ’10 Teen Chick Lit Challenge check-in.  What are you reading for the challenge?  (And if you haven’t signed up for the challenge, there’s still time!  Get all the details here.)

Happy reading!

10 in ’10 Teen Chick Lit Challenge – Kay’s reading list!

Okay, now I get to share my own reading list for the 10 in ’10 Teen Chick Lit Challenge. Good times!

10 in 10 Chick Lit Challenge

I absolutely LOVE teen chick lit, so I’ll be adding tons of additional books to my list. But here’s my starting line-up for the challenge to give me my first ten. Some of these are books on my TBR shelves and some are books I have on pre-order.

But again, that’s just for starters. Some of the teen chick lit books I was really looking forward to in 2010 (Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins and A Most Improper Magick by Stephanie Burgis) I’ve already read, so they won’t count. But I’ll include them in spirit. :-)

Be sure to add your blog post to Mr. Linky and grab the logo above to show you’re playing!

Oh, and did we mention PRIZES???

We know you’ve got a ton of books in your TBR pile. To make it even more fun to read the teen chick lit ones, we’ll be doing fun, impromptu giveaways throughout the year for participating challengers who check in with their progress!

And, of course, we need to have an awesome grand prize you can drool over, right? For challengers who read 10+ teen chick lit books during 2010 and let us know on our monthly check-in posts, we’ll be putting them in a drawing for a fabulous prize basket filled with great chick lit books, cool swag, and even some DVDs! Watch the monthly check-in posts for super secret peeks at the grand prize package.

And even more cool chick lit stuff…

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I know if a book is “chick lit”?

A: If you think it is, it is! There’s no standard definition for chick lit, and we definitely don’t want to be the chick lit police. :-) So we’re leaving it up to each challenger to decide if a book qualifies for the challenge. If you’re looking for examples to guide you (there are oh so many!), books like Meg Cabot’s The Princess Diaries series, Jen Calonita’s Secrets of My Hollywood Life series, Ally Carter’s Gallagher Girls spy series, Kate Brian’s Private series, and Tera Lynn Childs’ Oh. My. Gods. series are all great examples of teen chick lit. Even slightly darker books like Alyson Noel’s Immortals series still have a brilliant teen chick lit voice. And these are only a few of the many great teen chick lit books out there!

Q: What if I don’t have a book blog?

A: No worries at all. Simply share your progress in the comments on the monthly check-in posts on Jessica and Kay’s blogs. Better yet, share your thoughts in places like Goodreads, Shelfari, Amazon, and BarnesandNoble.com too. Let your voice be heard!

Q: What’s the deal with the chats? Are these real-time chats or interviews on the blog?

A: Real-time chats. Our guest authors will be joining us on Chatzy at a scheduled time to chat about all things chick lit (including their books). It’s a fun, informal chat that will be open to all. We’ll be sharing the schedules in the monthly check-in posts, so keep your eye on them for more details coming soon.

Q: I LOVE teen chick lit. Can I read more than 10?

A: Absolutely! 10 is the minimum number of books needed to be eligible for the grand prize drawing, but you can read as many teen chick lit books as your heart desires and check in with them all. The more, the merrier!

Happy reading!

Kay and Jessica
