High School Flashback Tour presents… Kimberly Derting!
Welcome to the High School Flashback Tour! A while back, a few author buddies and I thought it would be fun to do a week of high school reminiscing, sharing things we hadn’t thought about (or admitted) in years. And where better to do that than, you know, the Internet! (Secrets? What are those?) So this week, Kimberly Derting, Jen Nadol, Christy Raedeke, Christina Diaz Gonzalez and I will be hosting each other with all kinds of crazy questions about high school. We’ll be spilling our guts about the highs and lows of high school (complete with pictures and stories we will vehemently deny later). And we provide more than just entertainment… we’re offering prizes! This Friday on each of our blogs, we’ll be offering up a prize pack filled with these fabulous goodies:
Five blogs, five goodie packs to win. What could be better than that?? So please join me in kicking things off here with the hilarious and lovely… Kimberly Derting! Welcome, Kim!
The Gal
Kimberly Derting Short Bio: Kimberly lives in the Pacific Northwest, with her husband and their three beautiful (and often mouthy) children, who serve as an endless source of inspiration for her writing.
The Book
A girl with a morbid ability. And the boy who would never let anything happen to her.
The High School Flashback Tour1. What one thing that you did in high school do you now look back on and go “Seriously? What was I thinking???”? Okay, so let’s just say that I had this thing for Madonna in high school. No, not the “I wanted to make out with her” kind of thing, more like the I-wanted-to-be-her thing. Or at least look exactly like her. I remember going to a wedding when I was about 17 dressed in a lace skirt over lace leggings with a lace tank top and a pale pink shaker knit sweater, all topped off with a lace headband. I had bangle bracelets all up and down by arms. I WAS Madonna (circa 1985), and I thought I was awesome!
Clearly, Like a Virgin would be one of those songs (see “The Wedding Outfit” above). Also anything by Wham! or Rick Springfield (I wanted to be “Jesse’s Girl” so Rick would want me like that!).
Thanks for the fun flashback, Kim! Here’s where I’ll be spilling my guts this week: Monday – Jen Nadol‘s blog And yes, I’m over at Jen Nadol‘s today spilling the details on my infamous prom dress. Oh, she is shiny…

Definitely to pay more attention in school. Oh, and to spend less time worrying about what others think. And I can’t forget this one: that your social status in high school is not as important as you think it is. Hmm… I’m not sure this is a one-piece-of-advice kind of question, I could go on and on. How about this: home perms are definitely not your friend!

Such a good idea Kay! I can’t wait to go through all the blogs to read about your high school selfs!
And thanks for sharing Kim!
Great interview!
This HS Flashback tour is such a brilliant idea. I agree, why is it when we’re younger we think perms look nice?
I really need to see that photo of Kim at the wedding, circa 1985…
Fun interview!
Hee, I can’t help thinking of Glee when Like A Virgin comes up. That was the first time I heard that song, and BOY, what an introduction!
This was a great interview. I read The Body Finder a couple of weeks back and I have told everyone I know that this is a must read!!
It is funny how when we are in high school social status seems to be the most important thing in the world. I was lucky enough to not care what others thought and hung with whoever wanted to hang (which was mostly bandies…
D).
And why are there not any pictures of this lace skirt outfit?? LOL!! I was a child of the 90′s so the Madonna fashion was not really in but it is always fun to look at how the styles have changed.
Fun interview to read!!
This is such a fun idea. I can’t wait to read everyone’s posts! And hey, as far as 80′s icons went, Madonna was at least the brass ring to aim for. (I really wish there were a picture of this famous outfit though!)
Hopping over to read Kay’s interview!
What a fun idea. And not only are home perms bad news, home perms with your bangs sprayed and curled out to the sky doesnt work either!
Great interview! Very informative!
haha! Madonna is one of my favorites! I still love her.
I love the little photo and the being Madonna at a wedding must have been priceless to see. I was born in the late 80′s, but I absolutely adore ‘Jessie’s Girl’ so I can see how Kim could be obsessed with Rick Springfield.
woot madonna! reminds me of glee and that i havent watch the recent episodes :/
but i like the part about you dressing up to be madonna!
