A Friday breather and giveaway

Happy Friday!

Did you guess Sophie’s lie from her Booklover of the Week feature? Be sure to check the update on the Wednesday post to find out!

We’re going to be taking a short breather from our Friday Spotlights. I’ll be kicking back for a week or two and having a little bit of book-ish fun of my own. Today, we’re talking books, books, books… with a giveaway!

That’s a good way to end the week, right? A giveaway? :-)

This week, I’m talking about the latest and greatest on my bookshelf. I tweeted yesterday that I tallied up my purchases and discovered that I had purchased nearly 40 books over the summer. This is in addition to the huge stack of books I have waiting to be read from our awesome local library… and after swearing I would NOT buy any more books until my own TBR pile was completely gone.

Apparently, I should not be allowed in a bookstore unchaperoned because I (and my wallet) require adult supervision at all times.

But it occurred to me that all of the books I purchased were for one of two reasons:

1) They are research for The Cinderella Society, book 2 or the upcoming book I’m going to dive into when TCS 2 is off to my editor

-or-

2) They are books I purchased ’cause I wanted to and am saving as my reward for getting TCS 2 off to my editor

I have a goal to read 100 books in 2009. I keep a tally on the blog of the books I’ve read (see the bottom blue box on the right). So far, I am woefully behind. I’ve only read 28 books this year! Granted, I did two major rounds of revisions on The Cinderella Society plus wrote TCS book 2 from scratch. But still. That is way pathetic, no?

But never fear! I now have not one, not two, but three towering stacks of books to be read from November 1st through December 31st. I may not hit my 100-book goal, but I’ll make a major dent in it.

As I think of all the fabulous books I’ve bought this summer, I thought it would be fun to share what the last book I bought was and why I bought it. (But only if you share yours. Deal?)

I actually bought seven on my last book-buying bonanza which was (ahem) yesterday. The last book I chose was:

NERDS: National Espionage, Rescue, and Defense Society (Book One)
by Michael Buckley

Why this book? Because it just looks so flippin’ cool! It’s got all kinds of stuff I love: espionage, humor, quirky characters, unpopular kids who are secretly the game changers… seriously, what’s not to love? Here’s a little blurb about it:

Michael Buckley is at his comic best in this madcap new series sure to appeal to kids looking for a quick, exciting read.

Combining all the excitement of international espionage and all the awkwardness of elementary school, NERDS, featuring a group of unpopular students who run a spy network from inside their school, hits the mark. With the help of cutting-edge science, their nerdy qualities are enhanced and transformed into incredible abilities! They battle the Hyena, a former junior beauty pageant contestant turned assassin, and an array of James Bond–style villains, each with an evil plan more diabolical and more ridiculous than the last.

I cannot wait to dive into this book!

So what about you? Comment below with the last book you bought and why you bought it for your chance to win my early copy of FOREST BORN by Shannon Hale. (Which I meant to give away two months ago. Sigh.) What’s new on your shelf?

  1. The last book I bought was Full Moon: A Dark Guardian Novel by Rachel Hawthorne. I still haven’t read it yet, and the third one in the series just came out so I’m really behind. I haven’t been able to buy books in forever because due to lack of money, luckily my library is extremely well stocked!

Thank you for offering a copy of Forest Born – it looks amazing!

  2. Hi :)
The last book I bought was ROSEMARY AND RUE by Seanan McGuire.
I lovingly devoured it that afternoon.
    :)
    All the best,
    @RKCharron
    xoxo

  3. Do pre-oprders count? If they do it was Shadowland by Alyson Noel because Blue Moon was AWESOME! If not, it was Carpe Corpus by Rachel Caine because I love that series so much. I actually pre-ordered that too…

  4. I’ve been so busy I haven’t been on your blog in FOREVER! I just bought Unwind by Neal Shusterman. :)

  5. The last books I bought was Glitz, Lipstick Jungle and How To Kill Your Husband. I haven’t read any of them yet…

  6. I can’t remember that far back! I haven’t bought a book since my book buying spree this in June and July while I was at my Grandparents in CA. But I’m trying to think back. I’m thinking it was Graceling, but it also might be Vampire Academy, which is signed from an event she did earlier at the bookstore.

But I can’t remember. Let me do a little thinking out loud. I bought Graceling in the financial district while we were walking around after we went to the MOMA and that was the second day in San Francisco. I got VA at a Books Inc. on . . . California Ave, and before we did that we had went to the . . . DeYoung Museum in Golden Gate park and then just drove around. That must’ve been on the . . . third day.

So it’s Vampire Academy that I bought last! I bought it mostly because it was signed and because I heard the series was really good. But I think I also got it mixed up with that other series, Vampire Diaries? I thought at the time I was buying the book so I could read it before the show, but I guess not, lol. I still haven’t read it. I’m waiting until I can get the others, which I can at K-Mart (My closest bookstore that isn’t a bookstore) so I just need the money! :)

  7. The last book I bought (at a garage sale) was Songs in Ordinary Time by Mary McGarry Morris.

  8. The last book I bought was Blood Promise (Vampire Academy, Book 4) by Richelle Mead. I’ve read this series this week and last week and am loving it. Although, book 4 was sooooo slow. I’m nearly done and now it’s action packed and I know it’s going to end with a major cliffhanger because I just know and because EVERYONE keeps telling me this! Damn it Twitter friends!

    Anywho, great series. :)

  9. I just bought CRASHED by Robin Wasserman, the sequel to SKINNED. Great, thought-provoking dystopian YA!

  10. I last bought Dan Brown’s The Lost Symbol, because I need a new fun, fast-paced read and loved his other books.

  11. The last book I bought was the Secret Rites of Social Butterflies in hardback. I got it because it was on major clearance, and the cover is really cool.

  12. Well on my last trip to the bookstore (which was LAST Saturday- see it’s been almost a week) I bought The Ex Games by Jennifer Echols, Suspicion by Kate Brian, and Willow by Julia Hoban. The first 2 had just come out and I of course HAD to have them – I love both of their books. And I didn’t have a Hardcover of Willow yet – so of course at her signing I have to buy a hardcover for her to sign! And we won’t visit my trip to the bookstore the previous week… I may have walked out with ummmm, well more than I bought last Saturday.

  13. The last book I bought was Hunger my Michael Grant. I bought it because I really enjoyed the first one Gone and it is a thick book so I felt that it was worth the cost. Also the cover is awesome so yeah.

  14. The last book I bought was Coming Attractions by Robin Jones Gunn ( Katie Weldon Series – Book 3), well I’ve already read the book 1 and 2, so I wanted to read the last Katie Weldon’s book ( so far) It was very fun and I got deeply happy because it was a great book.

  15. The last book I bought hmm had to think about it because usually I get my books from the library I think was New Moon by Stephenie Meyer. I had gotten the first book as a gift and the last two books by others also a gift some reason or other I didn’t have the second though I’d already read it. So I bought to complete the collection and even though I wonder at their popularity the characters are very lovable and I’m a fan of hers.

  16. The last book I bought was Prophecy of the Sisters at a book signing yesterday. I bought it for a friend because I read it already!

  17. I just bought some ebooks this morning… I bought An Abundance of Katherines (because I really liked Looking for Alaska), Secrets of My Hollywood Life: Family Affairs (because I’m almost done with On Location) and a couple by Kenneth Oppel (because I loved the Silverwing books)
…I really bought them because I had this 25% coupon that I didn’t want to expire!

  18. i do the same thing. I cannot go into a bookstore without getting at least one. My stack is getting taller.

  19. Hi Kay! I bought The Help this past week by Kathryn Stockett. This one came to me through a recommendation on a blog I read. Then it seemed like I seen it everywhere… I had not even heard of it before then. On the recommendations alone I purchased it this past week and then seen it won as best book of the year on the BBAW site.

This is my TBR within the next month and I am starting an online book club with this book being the first read.

    I am so excited! :)
